Outstanding Tiny Desk AI: The Trend and Video Template

Explore the Outstanding Tiny Desk AI trend, the familiar band and saxophone cuts, and how to prepare a portrait responsibly.

What is the Outstanding Tiny Desk AI trend?

The trend reimagines a moment from Charlie Wilson's 2023 NPR Tiny Desk performance of The Gap Band's “Outstanding.” In the viral format, an AI-edited performer joins the familiar scene while the band, timing and music make the reference recognizable. See the original NPR performance for its source context; watching or sharing a sample does not grant rights to the footage or song.

TinyDesk AI Maker is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by NPR or TikTok. The result is an AI-edited interpretation, not a recording of a real performance.

How the Outstanding template works

The example on our home page is one complete edit, not a selection of different templates: the band opens, a new lead appears in close-up, a saxophone response follows, and the band returns for the ending. Only the lead is replaced; the other shots and soundtrack come from the reference. The finished example runs about 17.67 seconds in a vertical frame.

The original cuts and timing are central to the format. For more background on the reference footage and the trend, see this independent technical account. Access to either a sample or a tool is not permission to reuse copyrighted video or music.

Choose a portrait that gives the subject room

Use a clear, well-lit portrait of one consenting adult. Face visibility matters: avoid heavy shadows, extreme angles, and objects covering the face. A simple background and separation between the person and surroundings can make the subject easier to read. For a second image, choose another view of the same person, not a different performer, and obtain that person's explicit consent for this AI video use.

Check the files before uploading: each image must be 512–5999 pixels on each side, have a width-to-height aspect ratio between 0.5 and 1.25, and be no larger than 10 MiB. The combined upload limit is 20 MiB. Cropping or resizing can help meet the limits, but do not stretch the face or upscale a blurry image and expect it to recover detail.

Compose for a small vertical screen

The intended output is a portrait video of roughly 17.67 seconds at 480 × 854 pixels. Choose a subject that remains identifiable at that size and leave some space around the head and shoulders. Avoid depending on tiny text, detailed props, or important action at the edges. If you add captions or graphics later, check them on a phone and keep them clear of platform controls.

The duration describes the intended video, not a guaranteed generation or processing time. Review the finished result for visual artifacts, likeness, and any elements that could mislead viewers before sharing. Label AI-generated material appropriately rather than presenting it as footage of an actual event.

Clear rights before sharing

You need permission for the person's likeness and separate rights for all submitted media and for any source video and audio used in your project. A sample, a music track, or access to a tool does not grant those rights or automatically authorize commercial use. Check the intended platform and territory as well as the intended use; if you cannot establish permission, choose material you can use.

Plan credits and availability

One generation uses 10 credits. The site describes one-time packs of 10, 30, and 50 credits for one, three, or five generations respectively; they are not subscriptions. See pricing for current details. Purchases and generation remain disabled while the required licensed source/template and checkout or generation provider are unavailable or their configured checks fail. Do not assume a pack can currently be purchased or a video generated.

When the service is available, open the home page and studio to check its current status. For the upload and generation sequence, read how to make a Tiny Desk AI video.
